Weymouth and Portland
Situated in the centre of the south coast Weymouth is a popular seaside town with an impressive Georgian Esplanade and a famous beach. Joined to the mainland of Weymouth, by the south-east tip of Chesil Beach and a public road bridge, the "Island" of Portland is a unique place to live and is famous for its building stone being composed of a huge tilted table of limestone, 4.5 miles long and 1.75 miles wide, rising to nearly 500 feet before sloping gently southwards to Portland Bill.
Much of Dorset around Weymouth has been designated an "Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty" and now has World Heritage Status. Apart from its many fine heritage buildings, Weymouth has many modern new facilites, there is a new town centre shopping complex with 10 pin bowling and 9 screen multiplex cinema. The harbour and marina are busy throughout the year with fishing boats, pleasure craft of all types, yachts, catamarans and the high speed fast Condor Ferries providing fast links to the Channel Islands and St Malo in France.
Weymouth's success as a leisure resort has spurred the growth of a wide variety of cafés and restaurants covering all tastes and pockets. As well as the cross channel links from the harbour, Weymouth is just over 2 1/2 hours form London by rail and an hour from Bournemouth International Airport. It also has extensive bus services serving the local area.
